The Game Of Politics Has Evolved Into A Dark Force.

A semi-humorous, yet serious, quasi-OpEd written by Michelle Maynard-Koenig

I do not claim to be the most knowledgeable or educated in the galaxy of politics, but I am knowledgeable and have first-hand experience with day-to-day living in a world where taxes are high, morale is low, and hate runs rampant. I, quite honestly, am in a quandary as to choosing a direction to place my vote. Though I try to find something positive in all things, I find it difficult when observing our political system. I see a dark and ugly world of politics; an out of control monstrous force that seems to be spreading like fungi under a toadstool. (Yes, I know … fungi needs lov’n too!) Being an eternal optimist, that irks me to no end. Yet, for a force of darkness to exist, there has to be a force of light. This thinking of “force” leads me to the insightful teachings of the one, the only, Yoda, an enlightened character from the Star Wars saga.

Yoda: Yes, run! Yes, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan’s apprentice.
Luke: Vader… Is the dark side stronger?
Yoda: No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.
Luke: But how am I to know the good side from the bad?
Yoda: You will know… when you are calm, at peace, passive. A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, NEVER for attack.
Luke: But tell me why I can’t…
Yoda: No, no! There is no “why”.

(from Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

I think most anyone will agree with me that politics is a hideous business. How do we change it from slimy to shiny? How do we shift from distrust in a system that governs our lives to a system that is constructive and conducive to the betterment of ALL? What I learned from Yoda is that shift MUST begin within each of us, individually, before it can collectively grow in strength to affect the velocity of the dark force of politics, and transform it into an entity that we are optimistic and have faith in. We must each become a “Jedi.”

Remember, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware. Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side is they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. (Yoda, from Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983))

I don’t know about you, but I was taught that our nation was founded upon the brilliance of freedom-thinking patriots (let’s call them “Jedi’s”) whose intention (let’s call it “force”) was to design a government of the people, by the people, leaving no room for a monarchy or dictatorship (let’s call it “Darth Vader”). How did we get there to here in just a mere 300 years? Our political system has so much potential to be something great, something to believe in, something to trust, not just from its own citizens but all inhabitants of the world, of every nation, culture and tribe. A government that allows its citizens to accept or reject the direction it is heading at each and every election, not require its citizens to join it in the pits of muck and mire of condescending and destructive attacks and vitriol. It seems we have two political parties: Dark Force A and Dark Force B. Yes, if we want to see our country transition from a dark force to a force of light, we must all become Jedi-citizens. Wouldn’t that be awesome? A third political party: Jedi.

If Yoda was a living being today, I would, without a doubt, vote for him as President, leader of Congress, and chief of our Judicial branch. What better WHIP could there be?! Better yet, maybe every member of the political system should watch the entire Star Wars saga, then be required to put into action what they have learned!
